This blog post is for the Twitter Ebook Project that my friend Justin McCullough is putting together. His goal for the project is to collect the best of the best advice, quotes, good examples and best practices of using twitter. so here is what I have to share about my take on twitter.
One thing that is important to remember with all social media is to answer the question they ask. In Twitter’s case, they ask what’s happening? So simply share what you’re doing. Don’t over complicate this.
Be social! Read other people’s tweets to respond to them, retweet them, answer them and be part of the community. people will not listen to you if you are not listening to them. This is something that I had to learn the hard way.
In your twitter bio, send people to a page related to social media or twitter specifically. It’s always important to have your landing page be as specific as possible to the person that is visiting your site. for instance, my link takes people to a page that I wrote about some simple twitter lessons from Scott Stratten.
Just like with real sales, be interested not in what you want, but what your market wants. They want to be listened to. They want people to interact with them. Give that to them and make it valuable because it will come back tenfold in the end.
Don’t expect to sign up for twitter and make thousands of dollars in one day. Social media does not work that way and neither does Twitter. You must build up your social credibility before you ever expect to monetize social media. The goal is not to make money, but to make friends that will do business with you anytime they need your service or product.
The main point is that Twitter is not to make money but to make friends.
