Be in the Business of Setting Up Systems

Business Systems and Online Marketing System

Setting up business systems is the absolute must or else it’s just a job in disguise. The more I work with small business owners, the more I realize how many business owners don’t really have a system.

Remember that evil clown? McDonalds?

McDonalds isn’t in the business of selling hamburgers, they are in the business of selling systems that can be done by absolutely anyone. Press this button, flip that burger, throw it in a bag and get money. Done.

I realized today, as I’m setting up a DeskAway project, that my business, like McDonalds’ business, is setting up systems that can be run by anyone. It’s not the niche I’m in. Nor is it whatever I’m selling. My primary responsibility is to make sure that my systems are getting better results with every single action taken in my business.

Having systems in place make it possible to grow. I’ve personally reached that point to where if I did everything myself by hand, I’d go insane. Systems make projects scalable. Meaning that more can get done without more work from you.

I want to start being in the business of making systems and getting out of the business of being in the system. If you want a good starting point to doing this, check out Andrew Hansen’s post on what tasks to focus on and Tim Ferriss’ interview with Michael Gerber.

Aah! This resonates with me SO much, I am right now putting together systems to manage my social media clients :) It is hard but gosh once it is done it makes your life so much better… plus I hear that down the line businesses with the most systems are the easiest to sell.

It really is hard work at the beginning and a lot of trial and error, but that refining will pay off times 100 in the end. And you are dead on with systems making a business easier to sell. Who wants to buy a new job?

Thanks a ton for the comment Maren!!

Systems are so impotant in business. And like you said, it is what McDonalds really sells. So why is it that most people in business totally miss this part. It is very important to the success of any business. Thanks.

That's a great question you pose there. Why do so many small business owners completely skip the system building? I believe it mostly goes back to the “do it yourself” mind frame that is rampant in most small businesses. I watched that mindset destroy my Uncle's motorcycle shop.
